Hennessy Beach (Curren$y)

Dom Kennedy born Dominic Hunn, Los Angeles California 1984 is one of hip-hops newest stars and he’s here to stay. Hailing from the West Coast Kennedy has a style reminiscent of a Currensy and J.Cole hybrid. Using each record to tell a story with his cinematic flow and delivery he easily captivates any listener. Listening to Dom's records you immediately feel like you are wherever Dom is trying to take you thanks to impressive beat selection nostalgic of an early Wiz Khalifa. The main theme is his own story of a kid growing up in Leimert Park finding his way through life. From hangin’ with the homies on the block to finding a wife among hoes and even struggling with classes and professors it seems as though there is a thorough storybook on Kennedy’s shelf.

Dom’s most notable release “From the Westside with Love” and his most recent “Yellow Album” are perfect examples of the rapper’s mastery of his craft. FTWWL is a come-up story and it completely tells the story of a rapper with his foot in success’s door. With powerful lines such as “Barack couldn’t even bring change like this” he lets you know exactly what he plans to do in the rap game. Fast forward to “Yellow Album” and Dom has moved from having his foot in the door to sitting on the living room couch. The mixtape boasts features from heavy hitters Kendrick Lamar, Too Short and Rick Ross and it shows Kennedy’s continued progressive growth and development.  While not quite as substantial as FTWWL, Yellow Album is a worthy listen as it demonstrates another side of Kennedy.  Unlike many rappers who completely flip and change up when success comes Dom shows versatility and adaptiveness rapper who instead of finding a new lane with success he chooses to luxuriously travel the same path. Kennedy is a voice missing in the mainstream rap game; many mainstream and established underground artists such as Rick Ross and Curren$y have already cosigned the Leimert Park kid so it’s only a matter of time before it's heard. So in the meantime in the words of Dom “Just Be Cool”.

Kanye and Kim grace the Red Carpet for "Cruel Summer"

About the film via Kanye:

“It related to a post-Steve Jobs, post-Windows era, where we’re always on our BlackBerry in a ball game or at the movies. I was very particular about having the screens separate, where your mind puts the screens back together, the way you put memories together. I’m not the best director in the world, but I had an idea that I thought would be amazing to inspire people, like a dream of one day this being the way people watch movies. You know, [Quentin] Tarantino doing a movie like this or a horror movie like this, animation, 3-D … in this form that surrounds you. People want to go back and see it more and more because they missed something to their left or to their right, and it feels more like the experience of life."

Drake live in Atlanta

One of the most anticipated stops on his “Club Paradise” tour, Drake blesses Atlanta with an astonishing event. The OVOXO rep exclaimed to the crown, “They’ve been trying to keep us apart for about a year and a half now,” this is true because Drake’s last Atlanta performance was in October of 2010.

As J.Cole introduces him Drizzy takes the stage to “Lord Knows”, his high powered Just Blaze produced record with Rick Ross from Take Care. I’ve seen videos of other performances such as the O2 Arena in London but this set came across very fresh. Drizzy’s crooning and live antics easily swooned the crowd of 17k already awakened by his openers including Meek Mill French Montana 2 Chainz Waka Flocka and the aforementioned J.Cole.

The Drake set was theatrical, being told as a night out with your friends going to the club with each record having an accompanying light and/or small firework show. A little way through the show Drake brings out “the greatest thing to happen to  hip-hip in a long time” 2 Chainz to “No Lie” and “Spend It Remix”, shockingly T.I., came out during his verse and stayed to perform “What You Know”, after a little push by Drake, via, “I ain’t much of a favor asker, but since we are in the A, and you are The King, can we take ‘em back on some classic shit?”. Drake keeping with his “Club Paradise” theme telling the story of a night at the club brought Waka Flocka back out during his set via “You know when it’s 1:30 in the club, you’ve had one too many drinks, a nigga lookin at you funny and another one bumps you? It’s only one nigga I wanna hear at that point” and he dubbed Waka “The King of the Club,” he performed his only Drake record, “Round of Applause”. Drake at this point stopped to introduce his “brother” Future, who accompanied Drake as they performed “Tony Montana”, followed by “Same Damn Time” which surprisingly rocked the crowd like it was a Drake record.

The crowd as expected was largely women of all ages. He told a story of one women who stopped him and ask for a picture which he agreed to  and he confidently tied the “asking for a photo” in a performance of “The Motto”. Before that during French Montana’s appearance French asked “where all the real niggas at?” Drake added “Just for tonight, while we’re all here I wouldn’t take this outside of the show but real niggas can be white, Asian, latino or any race” while it was for laughs it cleverly demonstrated the all races were present.  Another genius part of his act was turning up the house lights and individually shouting out people in the crowd. Identifying them not as fans but as family and friends and as the show came to a close he left the audience with this:
“Until next time Atlanta… Take Care.”

The Weeknd Live in Atlanta

Abel Tesfaye better known as “The Weeknd” has left the Canadian border as a performer and he recently stopped at Atlanta’s Center Stage May 2nd. The Weeknd is a complete package; his show comes with a drummer, keyboard player, and of course bass and electric guitarist with a laptop DJ aiding ever so slightly. At Center Stage in Atlanta he performed more or less his Coachella Set opening with “High For This” cruising into the first line of “D.D.” continuing into The Birds Pt. 1 and so on. The Weeknd’s voice is astounding in person, because of the heavy sampling in his music the songs have to be either stripped down or recreated by his band on stage. His powerful voice easily sears through the crowd (which was a packed and live house) which sang along to every song even the French influenced “Montreal”. This being his first Atlanta performance his on-stage energy and dancing was unfamiliar but very welcomed. The Atlanta crowd complete with DJ Drama, Trouble, Alley Boy and The Weeknd’s own xo Big O family responded and cheered up until the very end and spurred Tesfaye to come back on stage and perform one last song, “Wicked Games”. It was an amazing show.  Professional cameras were not allowed but I managed to catch a clip on my droid before the battery died. You can catch a clip of “The Knowing” below.
